Jaipur is also a city of temples, as the Rajputs were devout Hindus, who reiterated their religious faith, in worship of various gods and goddesses, as they went to frequent wars.
Govind Devji Temple
This popular temple of Jaipur is dedicated to Lord Krishna. and is located in the central pavilion of the Jai Niwas Garden. The image of the patron deity-Govind Devji, originally installed in a temple of Vrindavan, was reinstalled here by Sawai Jai Singh II as his family deity. Besides being so historic, the temple is unique because it does not have a spire, which is a the usual hallmark of Hindu temples.
Galtaji
This is an ancient pilgrimage centre, lying beyond the gardens amidst low hills. Temples, pavilions and holy kunds (natural spring and reservoirs) along with lush landscape make it a delightful spot. The small temple of the Sun god, built by Diwan Kriparam on the top of the highest peak is visible from all parts of the city.
Moti Doongari and Lakshmi Narayan Temple
Moti Doongari is a hilltop fort built like a Scottish castle, that adds a picture postcard image to the city, as it looms in the distance. Although this is the private property of the royal family, and access is denied, you can visit the beautiful The Ganesh ( The God of Good Luck) Temple at the foot of the hill as well as the Lakshmi Narayan ( The Goddess of Wealth)Temple built in marble a few years back.
Jain Temple
There is a large Jain community in this region, and you can visit the exquisite Jain temple on the Agra road, and admire some of the most beautiful 19th century paintings on its wall, done in characteristic Jaipur style.
Old City Temples
Once a settlement of the nobles, local residents and craftsmen , the city of Amer now lies in ruins. However, you can still enjoy the remanants of its rich past in the intricately carved and Jagat Shiromani Temple, which is a temple for Lord Krishna, associated with his great devotee, the royal princess, Meerabai, as well as an ancient temple of Narsinghji , which is another version of Krishna. There is also a magnificent step-well here, known as ‘Panna Mian-ka-kund’
Birla Mandir and Planetarium
This is a beautiful new temple in white marble, made by the Birlas, known as one of the leading industrial houses in India, and who are known for their philanthropy. You can watch one of the interesting shows at the planetarium closeby. |
