On the banks of the shimmering lake Pichola, is one of the most romantic cities of Rajasthan. Nestled among the lush hills of the Aravallis, it has inevitably been dubbed the 'Venice of the East'. It is a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow lanes strewn with stalls. It carries the flavor of the heroic past, epitomizing valor and chivalry. One of the most romantic places in India, the city was founded in 1567 by Maharana Udai Singh on the advice of a sage. Udaipur was last of the numerous Mewar capitals. It was in Udaipur that legendary Maharana Pratap was born.
The city acquires its scenic beauty from the Aravalis. Three lakes - Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Udai Sagar makes it an Oasis in the desert. This city full of enchanting tales has a remarkable past, with episodes of heroism and splendor. The major attraction of Udaipur is the spectacular City Palace that stands white and majestic on a hill. Balconies, towers and cupolas surmount the palace and there are fine views over the lake and the city from the upper terraces. Walls for battlements surround it; at the entrance is a triple arched gate, called the Tripolia, which was built in 1725.

The main part of the palace is now preserved as a museum. It includes the Mor Chowk with it's beautiful mosiacs of peacocks. The Manak Mahal has glass and mirror work, while Krishna Vilas has a remarkable collection of miniatures. In the Bari Mahal, there is a pleasant central garden. Another monument which has it's own charm is the Suraj Gokhada (the balcony of the sun). Here the Maharanas of Mewar came before the people during troubled times to restore confidence in them. The blue and white ceramics of Chini Chitrashala are extremely fascinating.
