Pondicherry is one of the most fascinating places to visit in South India. It is set against the backdrop of a scenery characteristic of the the Deccan Plateau, with lush vegetation, comprising of swaying palm trees, cashew and ‘neem’ trees, that thrive in the rich volcanic reddish soil that forms a part of its geography. Adding to this visual beauty is its unique aroma of typical ethnic and French cultures. For, it was, at one time, a French settlement, and its name is derived from the local word, ‘Puducheri’, in its literal meaning being translated as ‘the new settlement’
Fondly referred to as Pondy, this is a Union Territory under the Indian Constitution, but the town has pockets in three neighboring States that skirt it. These are the areas of Karaikal, which lies in Tamil Nadu, Mahe which is a part of Kerala, and Yanam, that is a part of Andhra Pradesh.
