India is invariably associated with the mighty Himalayan chain in the north, when it comes to mountains and hill stations. However, this country has such a vast geography, that even the more sub-tropical parts of South India have some cooler climes and beautiful scenic mountains, where you find equally exhilerating hill resorts and getaways.
Historical Background
One such destination is Ooty, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, esconsed amidst the gorgeous ‘Nilgiri’ ranges or the blue mountains of southern India, so called, as their lush vegetation and bluish sheen gives them a distinct splendor. Actually, Ooty owes its particular beauty to its geographical vantage of being surrounded by four majestic hills -Doddabetta, Snowdon, Elk Hill and Club Hill. These hills are part of the Nilgiri ranges that are really the meeting point for the Western and the Eastern Ghat.
Recognizing its charming environments, the British, with their base at the Madras Presidency, had developed it as a summer capital, and had established a military cantonment at nearby Conoor. So, this hill station has the enigmatic fragrance of history, besides the bracing mountain air, with all its alpine trappings of tall pines, steep adventure trails, and even a small lake. Situated at an altitude of 2,286 meters above sea level, another name for Ooty, is ‘Udhagamandalam’.

Considering its location, if you are making a business trip or a holiday in any region in the South, putting Ooty on your itinerary for a refreshing break, would be a good idea, although, of course, it is well linked with all the northern states as well, but, in that case, longer travel time is required.
Getting there
The nearest airport to Ooty at Coimbatore, which is 98 kms away and is the commercial hub of the state of Tamil Nadu. From here, you have to take a taxi to go up to the resort. This airport is also a short flight from Cochin, ( 250 km) and Bangalore ( 276 km),which are in the neighboring states of Kerala and Karnataka. From all these regions, frequent deluxe buses ply for Coonoor and Ooty as well as from Bangalore (via Mysore), Chennai, Kanyakumari, Thanjavur and Tirupati.
But for a real picturesque journey, take the miniature railway from Mettupalayam, north of Coimbatore, and enjoy the experience of the train that chugs through the winding curves of spectacular rain forests that clothe the precipitous eastern slopes of the Nilgiris, passing through Conoor, to arrive at Ooty.
