The Kaziranga National Park is located among the forests of Jorhat district in the north-eastern state of Assam and covers an area of 430 sq. km. Its borders run along the mighty Brahmaputra river. Due to torrential monsoons and annual floods, the ideal season for visiting the park is a short span of three months, even though the park is open from the mid-November to April. The park is an epitome of success for wildlife conservation the numbers of the one-horned rhinoceros, for which the park is world famous, having risen remarkably over the years. Having gone as low as 15, the efforts to protect the animal began only after the park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940. Today the count is about 900 approximately. Although the park is famous mainly for its rhinos, it also has a very healthy population of other animals including tigers and elephants.
