The Fort
The simple double-storey palace of the Lingayat rulers stands within the precincts of its walls And, although this is unlike any of the grand palaces one sees elsewhere in India, it is worth a visit. It is marked by two elephants, built of cement and mortar standing in the compound. According to the local story, the king used to be woken up every morning by the trumpeting of two of his favorite elephants under his window. One day he sent word to the mahout that he wanted to sleep late. However, the order never reached the man and he brought the elephants at the usual time and woke up the king. The king got so furious that he had the elephants and the mahout killed. Later, he regretted his action and got images of the elephants constructed.
Temples and monuments
Although there is more to see by way of treks and breathtaking landscape, Kodagu has a few temples that are worth visiting. The Bagamandala Temple has a scenic locale, built at the confluence of the Cauvery-Sujyothi Rivers. It is constructed in the multi-roofed Kerala style. Also interesting is the two hundred old Omkareshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is a unique blend of Islamic and Gothic styles.
Raja’s Seat
This was a favorite spot of the kings from where they enjoyed the sweep of the mist-covered blue hills and valleys with green fields. The kings used to sit here every evening to watch the sunset. Today, the area around Raja's Seat has been developed into a public garden.
Tadeyendamol Peak and Treks
This is the highest peak in the region, from where you can get a spectacular view of the Arabian Sea in the distance. Trekking, in fact, is the best way to drink in all the natural beauty of this region, and it is best to simply follow the mountain trails dotted with little shrines, some beside gushing waterfalls.
Abbi Falls
On an eight kilometer scenic trek are the Abbi Falls, that make an excellent picnic spot. Historical Background
