The Mahabodhi Temple

This is the main shrine restored to its past glory. It is intricately carved and has a large gilded image of Budha in the 'bhumisparsa mudra'. The temple is surrounded by small pillars and delicate lattice work. To maintain the balance of the main tower, there are four other smaller towers.

The original Bodhi tree under which Buddha gained enlightenment has perished, but the present tree is a descendant of the original tree, and is said to be obtained from Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, where it was taken by Sanghamitra, King Ashoka's daughter in the 3rd century BC. The red sandstone slab under this tree is said to be the throne on which Buddha sat.

Monastries and Temples

It is fascinating to see the various monasteries and temples constructed by different countries that are devoted to Buddhism, and see the native architectural styles of the Burma, Tibet, China, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bhutan.

The Archeological Museum

This small museum is an interesting place to visit while you are in Bodhgaya.

Meditation Institutes

There are a number of meditation institutes in Bodhgaya and they organize conventions, special meetings and discourses regularly. If you are interested in any of these programs, the best time to be in Bodhgaya would be in the months of January and February, which is when most of these activities take place.
