Google

Google Notes:

  • Since Google, Inc. opened their doors in September 1998, Google has become known as the worlds best and most popular search engine, winning awards from PC Magazine, CNET, ClickZ, Search Engine Watch and many more popular reviews.

  • Google currently (August, 2003) has an index of over 3 billion web pages.

  • Google has a unique search technology that is like no other search engine.  This technology allows them to produce the most accurate search results.

  • Google's search technology was created by two graduate students at Stanford University.

Google Results:

  • Google's main search results are provided solely from Google's search technology, offering results from no other engine or source.

  • The Google Directory is comprised of listings from The Open Directory Project (ODP, DMOZ).

  • Google provides results to AOL, NetScape, IWon, Teoma, AskJeeves and Yahoo! Web Results.

Files That Can Be Indexed By Google:

  • .pdf

  • .asp

  • .jsp

  • .hdml

  • .shtml

  • .xml, cfm

  • .doc

  • .xls

  • .ppt

  • .rtf

  • .wks

  • .lwp

  • .wri

Preparing For Google:

  • Do NOT Spam -- Google Has Strict Spam Guidelines.

  • Sites in the ODP get a boost in relevancy in Google.
Be sure to submit to the ODP as soon as your site is ready for human editors.

  • Determine Your Web Theme
Google is a "theme" based engine.  They like to provide search results to web sites that primarily contain a lot of information on a specific topic.  You should be able to name the "theme" of your site in a two to three word phrase.

  • Increase Your Site Popularity
Google is a popularity engine and will rank sites in regards to how popular they are.  The more visitors you have, the longer the stay and the more they return will play a role in your ranking in Google.

  • Create Many Content Oriented Pages!
Google loves large sites with loads of quality information.  The larger your site is, the more likely you are to gain a ranking under multiple variations of your keyword phrases.

  • Unique Content on Each Page
Always be sure that all of your pages are unique in content and never submit duplicate for similar pages.

  • Consider Your Word Count
Pages indexed in Google seem to contain anywhere from 100 words to 1000+ words.  Vary the word counts on your pages.

  • Heavily Cross Link Your Pages
This not only makes it easier for Googlebot to crawl through your site, it will also increase your Page Rank and make your pages easier for your visitors to navigate through.

  • Always Link Back To Your Home Page
Your home page will be viewed as your most important page.  The more links coming to it, the better.

  • Keep All Important Pages On Top
Keep all of your important pages on the first level of your site.  You should never include important pages below the first level.

  • Include A Site Map
Again, this will assist in presenting Googlebot with links to all of your pages from one central location.  Don't forget to include your links in text and add descriptions too!

  • Create a Customized 404 Page
When Googlebot or any other spider, visitor or editor visits a page that has been removed or relocated, they should be presented with a custom page which reflects the overall feel of your site and contains links to important pages within your site.

  • Analyze Competing Sites
Look at the quality of the site and content, the size of the site and pages, their titles, keyword weight, keyword placement, link popularity, traffic flow and attempt to model your own web site optimization after these sites.

  • Good Link Popularity
Google tends to rely on other webmasters view of your site.  If you have legitimate, relevant incoming links coming from other popular sites that are related to your theme, Google will view your site as more important over a site that has few, irrelevant incoming links.

  • Link To Quality Sites That Revolve Around Your Theme

                Titles:

  • Titles can contain about 80 characters.

  • The first letter of each word and proper nouns should be the only capitalized letters.

  • Analyze the titles of other top ranking competing sites.

  • Make sure that your title is an accurate representation of your pages content.

  • Each page should contain unique titles representing the content of each page.

  • Titles should not contain marketing hype.

  • Titles should contain important keyword phrases relevant to each page.

                Keywords:

  • Analyze competing sites for keyword density/placement.

  • Include keywords in your title.

  • Include keywords in headline tags.

  • Include keyword phrases in link text.

  • Include keywords in anchor text.

  • Include keyword phrases as phrases towards the beginning of your pages.

  • Use keyword phrases as phrases towards the middle of your pages.

  • Use keyword phrases as phrases towards the end of your pages.

  • Scatter the use of keywords as single term words throughout the body text of your pages.

  • Name pages after important keyword phrases relevant to that page.

  • Including some of your most important keywords in larger, bold font can be helpful.

  • Include keywords in ALT text.

  • Google is not keyword case sensitive.

  • See a list of the top 10 and the declining 10 keywords at Google. http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

                Descriptions:

  • If your site is listed in the ODP, Google may use your description from the ODP as your description in the Google index.

  • If your site is not listed in the ODP, they will pull words from throughout your page that seems to be the most relevant to the page being indexed.

  • Google may use a description from a snippet of your page AND your description from the ODP.

Google Cache

  • Google keeps a cache (or a copy of) each page in it's index.

  • If you do not want your pages cached, add the following META tag in the <head> section of your page: <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOARCHIVE">
     IMPORTANT!!:
Do not attempt this process with the intention of hiding content from Google.

Google Does Not Consider The Following:

  • Meta tags

  • Comment tags

  • Dublin Core tags

  • http-equiv tag

  • Style tags

Google Page Rank:

  • Google Page Rank is a method of determining the importance of a specific page/site.

  • Higher Page Rank sites get a boost in relevancy

  • Higher Page Rank sites will get crawled quicker/more often.

  • Page Rank must be "earned".  No one can buy a higher Page Rank and it is difficult for anyone to tamper with Page Rank results.

  • You can view the Page Rank of a site by downloading the Google Tool Bar.  Upon download, take notice of the green bar that appears on your browsers tool bar.
Hover your mouse over the bar and you will notice the Page Rank of the site.

                    Increasing Page Rank:

  • Heavily cross link all of your pages.  Link all pages to the home page.

  • Keep all of your important pages on the top level of your site.

  • Gain numerous incoming links from other comparative sites with equal or greater Page Rank of your own site.

  • Increase the traffic to your site.

  • Avoid any down-time from your server.

Google Does Not Like Spam:

Report spam to Google - spamreport@google.com

  • Link Farms and/or FFA pages.

  • Link exchange programs.

  • Offensive content.

  • Words repeated over and over again.

  • Hidden, invisible or tiny text.

  • Re-direct pages/meta refresh.

  • Automated submitting software.

  • Automated rank checking software.

  • Machine generated pages.

  • Duplicate pages.

  • Mirror sites.

  • Cloaking.

  • Multiple sites + multiple domains + one owner + all linked together.

  • Including text in a no frames tag if your site does not contain frames.

Submitting To Google:

  • It is not necessary to submit any page to Google. If you do submit, submit only your most important page to this search engine.

  • A majority of sites listed in Google are not manually submitted.

  • If you do submit to Google, you can do so here -- http://www.google.com/addurl.html

Google Indexing:

  • After your site has been indexed in Google, you may see that within a few hours to a few days that your site is gone.  Do not panic.  This happens frequently.  Your listing should be back within a week at the most.

  • If you do not find your site indexed in Google within a few months, chances are that they are not picking up your site from other sites in Google linked to you.  Work on building incoming links from other comparable sites listed in Google and if you are not already in the ODP, work on getting there.  Do not resubmit your site.  Google will find it when it is ready and if you re-submit, it could take longer.

The Google Dance:

  • The Google Dance takes place when all of the Google data bases are being updated.

  • The Google Dance takes place at least once per month, sometimes more.

  • The Google Dance is the time between the start and the end of an update.

  • Normally the Google Dance takes about 4 days.

  • During the Google Dance, different results will be displayed at different times for the same query.

  • The Google Dance is nothing to be concerned about.

  • If you suspect Google is doing the Dance, try doing a query on each of the three Google databases.  If you are produced with different results from each, then the Dance is taking place.

  • Use the Google Dance Machine to find out if Google is doing the dance.  Enter a keyword.  All databases will be queried and you will see the results from all at one time.  If the listings are showing up differently on different databases, you are witnessing the Google Dance.

Google Ad Words:

  • Google supplies paid listings from AdWords to AOL, Netscape and CompuServe Search.

  • AdWords are set up through an account.

  • AdWords can be purchased starting at $15 per every one thousand impressions, and as low as $8/thousand.

  • There is not a minimum deposit required.

  • You choose how many impressions you would like and put that amount into an account.

  • You are able to select the search pages you will appear on by your choice of keywords, language and country.

  • AdWords Options can be reviewed at http://www.google.com/ads/.

Google Premium Sponsorship Advertising:

  • It is proven that ads average click through rate 5X higher than the industry average, reaching about 22.3 million new users each month.

  • Google will pre-qualify customers and targeted keywords.

  • The staff optimizes every premier campaign to increase visibility and click through rates.

  • Once your campaign is up and running, Google supplies you with results of your ads.

  • Options can be reviewed at http://www.google.com/ads/.
