Alta Vista Search Engine Information

Alta Vista Note:

Alta Vista has a tendency to return different results at different times of the day.  If you are not satisfied with your results, try refreshing the page or trying back at a different time of the day.

Alta Vista Results:

• Alta Vista receives sponsored listings from Overture and Alta Vista's own advertisers.

• Alta Vista will use results from their own database for the main search results.

• Alta Vista obtains it's directory results from LookSmart.

  
  

Preparing for Alta Vista:

• Do NOT Spam!

• Make sure that your site includes quality content.

• Alta Vista often prefers older pages.

• Alta Vista seems to rank pages higher that contain less than 700 words.

• Alta Vista will consider and index your meta tags.

• Site popularity and link popularity is very important to Alta Vista.

            Titles:

• Titles should contain around 75 characters.

• The first letter of each word and proper nouns should be the only capitalized letters.

• Analyze the titles of other top ranking competing sites.

• Make sure that your title is an accurate representation of your pages content.

• Each page should contain unique titles representing the content of each page.

• Titles should not contain marketing hype.

• Titles should contain your most important keyword phrases that are relevant to the page.

• Sometimes, its best NOT include your keyword phrase as the first word in your title.

• Sometimes its best not to include your keyword phase as a phrase in your title but used as separate words.

            Descriptions:

• If your site is listed in the LookSmart directory, Alta Vista may use your titles and descriptions that appear in LookSmart.

• If your site is not listed in the LookSmart Directory, they will use your meta description be sure to craft this as an accurate and relevant description of your page including your most important keyword phrase.

• Each page should contain unique description representing the content of each page.

             Keywords:

• Analyze competing sites for keyword density/placement.

• Include keywords in your title.

• Include keywords in headline tags.

• Include keyword phrases in link text.

• Include keyword phrases in anchor text.

• Include keyword phrases as phrases towards the beginning of your pages.

• Use keyword phrases as phrases towards the middle of your pages.

• Use keyword phrases as phrases towards the end of your pages.

• Scatter the use of keywords as single term words throughout the body text of your pages.

• Name pages after important keyword phrases relevant to that page.

• Including some of your most important keywords in larger, bold font can be helpful.

• Include keywords in ALT text.

• Include keywords in a meta keyword tag.

• Searches in Alta Vista are case sensitive.  When you create a page for Alta Vista, include your keywords in lower case and upper case forms in your keyword tag.

• Do not repeat a keyword more than two times in your keyword tag.

• Include only keywords that are relevant to the page and used on the page.

• The fewer the keywords used, the better.

• Two to three keyword phrases are recommended per page.

• Alta Vista will index keywords in your style tags.

  
  

Analyzing Competing Sites:

• Analyzing competing sites should be done with care in the rare cases of cloaking.

• Always analyze competing sites but don't put too much weight on your findings.

  
  

Submitting To Alta Vista:

• Always be sure to submit your index page to Alta Vista before submitting any other pages.

• Don't ever re-submit your pages unless they have been changed. 

            Basic Submit:

• You can submit up to 5 pages per day for free.

• Your listing may be indexed within 4-6 weeks.

• Submit to http://addurl.altavista.com/sites/addurl/newurl.

• Scooter will crawl your pages every 5-6 weeks.

            Express Inclusion:

• $39 for the first URL, $24 each for URL's 2-10 and $19 each for up to 500 URL's. 

• You can submit up to 500 URL's.

• Your listing will be indexed in 1-2 weeks.

• Your pages will remain in the index for 6 months and will refresh every week.

           Listing Enhancements:

• The listing enhancement allows you to include your company logo, a descriptive icon, a highlighted custom tag line and additional text links within the description of your listing.

• To qualify for Listing Enhancements, you must first submit your site through Alta Vista's Express Inclusion.

• The cost for listing enhancements for your first URL is $50 for your logo, $25 for your icon, $50 for a custom tagline and $25 for text links.  For each additional URL, the price is $36 each for your logo and custom tag line and $18 each for an icon and text links.

            Trusted Feed Program:

• Designed for businesses submitting more than 500 URL's.

• Framed pages and pages with dynamic content will be accepted.

• URL's will remain in the database for 6 months and will refresh every week. Pricing will be based on Cost Per Click.  You will pay an average of $1.00 per URL and up to about $.20 per click.

• When your pay inclusion service is up after 6 months, Alta Vista will not remove your pages, they will simply add you to their 30 day crawl.

Alta Vista Spider - Scooter:

• Scooter crawls the web every 4-6 weeks.

• Will crawl 3 levels deep into your site.
